How to control grubs in your lawn area

Grubs, the larvae of certain types of beetles, can cause significant damage to lawns by feeding on the roots of grass. Here are a few methods for removing grubs from a lawn. Superintendent Lawn offer a chemical free biological insecticide control measure for most grub types. Biological insecticides do not harm honey bees and are safer for the environment although not as effective as chemical insecticides:

  1. Chemical Control: One effective way to control grubs is by applying a pesticide specifically labeled for grub control to your lawn. These products are typically applied in late summer or early fall, when grubs are actively feeding. Make sure to follow the instructions on the pesticide label, wear proper safety gear, and avoid applying during hot weather.
  2. Biological Control: Milky Spore, a naturally occurring bacteria that infects and kills the grubs of Japanese beetles. It’s applied as a powder and it has to be spread on the lawn. This method may take longer time to show the results but it is effective on the long run.
  3. Physical removal: If you have a small lawn or a specific area that is infested with grubs, you may be able to remove them by hand. Use a spade or shovel to carefully dig up the affected soil, and remove any grubs you find.
  4. Natural predators: Use of parasitic nematodes that are known to attack grubs can also be used as control measure.
  5. Proper lawn maintenance: Proper lawn care practices such as regular mowing, fertilizing, and watering can also help to keep grubs under control by promoting a healthy lawn that is better able to resist damage.
  6. Keep in mind, grubs are usually harmless to the lawn, they are an important food source for many beneficial insects, birds and animals. It’s a good practice to only treat grubs when necessary.

It’s important to identify the species of grubs in your lawn and target the specific one with the treatment. Often, when the grubs are killed off, the adult beetles will no longer be able to lay eggs, therefore breaking the life cycle. Consult an expert if you have any doubts about the type of grub and treatment method.
