How to apply lime to your lawn and when?

Applying lime to your lawn can help to improve the health and appearance of the grass by raising the pH level of the soil. Superintendent Lawn provides you with a granular type lime custom packaged to your lawn size. Here are the steps for applying granular type lime to your lawn:

  1. Test the pH of your soil: You can use a soil test kit or have a soil test done by a professional. The ideal pH for most lawn grasses is between 6.0 and 7.0. If the pH is below this range, your lawn will benefit from lime application.
  2. Determine the type and amount of lime to use: The type and amount of lime to use will depend on the results of the soil test. You can use either pelletized lime or powdered lime, both are effective.
  3. Prepare the lawn: Mow the lawn and remove any debris such as leaves and twigs from the lawn.
  4. Apply the lime: Spread the lime evenly over the lawn using a spreader. Be careful not to apply too much lime in one spot, as it can burn the grass.
  5. Water the lawn: Water the lawn thoroughly after applying the lime to help it reach the roots.
  6. Wait for the lime to take effect: It can take several weeks to several months for the lime to take effect and adjust the pH of the soil. A soil test after few weeks should be done to check the pH level of the soil.

It’s generally a good idea to apply lime to your lawn in the spring or fall. These seasons are typically the best times for lawn care because the weather is mild, and the grass is actively growing. Avoid applying lime during the heat of the summer, as it can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to disease.

Lime should be applied according to the soil test results and the type of grass, it should not be over applied as it can have negative effects on the lawn health. Consult a lawn care professional if you are not sure about the lime application.
